Structure and Materials

A single-mode double-clad fluoride fiber consists of three main regions:

  • Core: A small-diameter single-mode core, typically doped with rare-earth ions such as Pr³⁺, Ho³⁺, or Dy³⁺, which supports diffraction-limited laser output .
  • Inner Cladding: A larger multimode cladding surrounding the core, designed to guide pump light efficiently into the core for absorption by the active ions .
  • Outer Cladding: A low-refractive-index layer that confines both the core and inner cladding light, ensuring efficient pump guidance and minimal loss . Fluoride glasses such as ZBLAN (ZrF₄-BaF₂-LaF₃-AlF₃-NaF), InF₃, and AlF₃ are commonly used due to their low phonon energy, high rare-earth solubility, and transparency in the mid-infrared and visible ranges .

Operational Principles

  • Single-mode operation: The core supports only the fundamental mode, producing high beam quality (M² ~1.0) suitable for precision applications .
  • Cladding pumping: Pump light is injected into the inner cladding, which surrounds the core. The pump light is gradually absorbed by the rare-earth ions in the core, enabling high-power amplification without compromising beam quality .
  • Double-clad advantage: This design allows the use of high-power multimode pump sources while maintaining single-mode output, overcoming the limitations of traditional single-mode fibers that require diffraction-limited pump beams .

Single-mode double-clad fluoride fibers are widely used in:

  • Visible and mid-infrared fiber lasers: For example, Pr:ZBLAN fibers pumped by blue GaN diodes can generate red lasers with >1.5 W output and high slope efficiency .
  • High-power fiber amplifiers: Double-clad design enables scaling to multi-watt output while preserving single-mode beam quality .
  • Spectroscopy, LiDAR, and imaging: The fibers' transparency and tailored cladding diameters make them suitable for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), confocal microscopy, and fluorescence imaging .
