Overview of Cold Splicing

Cold splicing, or mechanical splicing, is a method of connecting two optical fibers without melting them. It relies on mechanical alignment and index-matching gels to ensure light passes efficiently from one fiber to another. This method is widely used for emergency repairs, field installations, and small-scale FTTH deployments due to its speed and minimal equipment requirements .

Types of Cold Splice Connections

  1. Mechanical Splice Sleeves
    • Fibers are cleaved and inserted into a sleeve that aligns the cores.
    • The sleeve may use clamps or adhesives to hold fibers in place.
    • Typical insertion loss is around 0.1–0.3 dB, with light loss up to 10% in some cases .
