Working Principle

The Double Ratio Detector is designed to evaluate the quality of fiber endfaces by measuring optical intensity variations across the core and cladding regions. The detector typically illuminates the fiber endface with a controlled light source and captures the reflected or scattered light using a photodetector array. The "double ratio" refers to two key intensity ratios:

  1. Core-to-Cladding Ratio – Compares the light intensity reflected from the fiber core to that from the surrounding cladding. A clean, defect-free core produces a predictable ratio, while contamination, scratches, or pits alter this ratio.
  2. Defect-to-Background Ratio – Measures the intensity of light scattered by potential defects relative to the background reflection. This helps identify small particles, scratches, or pits that may not be visible in standard imaging. By analyzing these two ratios simultaneously, the detector can automatically identify defects, contamination, or misalignment without relying solely on visual inspection. This method enhances sensitivity and reduces false positives compared to single-ratio or purely image-based inspection systems.
