Methods for bending and fixing mesh cable trays

Mesh cable trays can be safely bent and fixed on-site using simple cutting, bending, and clamping techniques, allowing flexible cable routing without specialized fittings.

Tools and Safety Equipment

To bend and fix mesh cable trays, you will need:

  • Bolt cutter or cable cutter for cutting tray sections
  • Pliers or nose pliers for wire manipulation
  • Measuring tape and marker/chalk for accurate bend placement
  • Hand gloves and safety gear to protect against sharp edges and zinc-coated wires

Bending Techniques

Mesh cable trays are highly flexible and can be modified directly on-site. Common bends include:

  • Horizontal 90° Bend (Flat Bend): Mark the bend line, cut selective wires if needed, and fold the tray along the line to form a smooth corner .
  • Vertical Bend (Up/Down): Lift or lower the tray section to navigate ceiling or floor transitions, maintaining a proper bend radius to avoid cable stress .
  • Tee (T-Junction) and Cross (4-Way Junction): Cut and separate wires to create branching points for multiple cable directions .
  • Offset Bend (Side Shift): Adjust the tray laterally to bypass obstacles while keeping cables organized . General Rules: Always mark the bend area, maintain a smooth radius to prevent cable damage, and avoid overfilling trays at corners .

Fixing and Assembly

  • Clamps and Connectors: Use mesh tray clamps or the manufacturer's connector systems to secure bends and junctions .
  • Protecting Cut Ends: Bolt cutters may drag zinc coating across cut ends, forming a protective layer. Rubber caps can also be applied to prevent injury and maintain corrosion protection .
  • Grounding and Bonding: Verify that all modified sections maintain proper electrical grounding and bonding to ensure safety .

Advantages of On-Site Bending

  • Eliminates the need for expensive pre-fabricated fittings
  • Allows seamless navigation around corners, columns, and tight spaces
  • Reduces installation time and labor costs
  • Maintains a clean, professional appearance in open-ceiling installations By following these methods, mesh cable trays can be customized efficiently on-site, providing flexible, safe, and professional cable management solutions for various environments.
