Color indicating the number of optical fiber cores

Individual optical fiber cores are identified by a standardized color sequence defined in the TIA-598-C/D standard, allowing technicians to distinguish fibers in multi-core cables.

Fiber Color Sequence

The TIA-598-C/D standard specifies a 12-color sequence for identifying individual fibers within a cable:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats in groups of 12, often using additional markers such as stripes or tube colors to differentiate higher-numbered fibers. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, the 34th fiber would be the Violet fiber in the Green tube if a tube-and-fiber system is used .

Outer Jacket and Tube Colors

The outer jacket color indicates the fiber type or mode:

  • Yellow: Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2)
  • Orange: OM1/OM2 multimode fiber
  • Aqua: OM3/OM4 multimode fiber
  • Erika Violet: Some OM4 cables for high-density data centers
  • Lime Green: OM5 multimode fiber for SWDM applications For high-count cables, buffer tubes may also be color-coded using the same 12-color sequence to help locate individual fibers within each tube .

Connector Colors

Connectors are color-coded to indicate fiber type and polish style:

  • Blue: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact)
  • Green: APC (Angled Physical Contact) This ensures proper mating and reduces return loss, especially in single-mode applications .

Summary

  • Individual fibers: Identified by a repeating 12-color sequence.
  • High-count cables: Use tube colors plus fiber colors for identification.
  • Outer jacket: Indicates fiber type (single-mode or multimode).
  • Connectors: Indicate polish type and fiber mode. By following this standardized color-coding system, technicians can quickly identify and manage fibers in complex installations, reducing errors during splicing, testing, and maintenance .
