PoE power supply fiber optic cable

PoE over fiber allows powering and connecting devices over long distances beyond the 100-meter Ethernet limit using fiber optic cables combined with DC power.

Overview

Traditional PoE delivers both data and power over copper Ethernet cables, but it is limited to about 100 meters due to voltage drop and power loss . Fiber optic cables, while excellent for long-distance, high-bandwidth data transmission, cannot carry electrical power directly. To overcome this, powered fiber cable systems integrate a low-voltage DC power line alongside the fiber, enabling PoE devices to be powered over kilometers of fiber .

How It Works

  1. Hybrid Cable Design: Powered fiber cables combine high-performance fiber for data with copper conductors for DC power. This allows a single cable run to deliver both data and power to remote devices .
  2. Power Supply: A central DC power supply (typically 48–57VDC) feeds the hybrid fiber cables. Modular power supplies can support multiple cables and devices, scaling from a few to dozens of endpoints .
  3. Device Connection: At the remote end, devices like IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, or small cells receive both data and PoE power without needing local AC outlets .
  4. Distance Extension: Using powered fiber, PoE devices can be deployed up to several kilometers away, far exceeding the 100-meter copper Ethernet limit. Media converters or PoE extenders may be used to interface fiber with standard Ethernet devices .

Commercial Solutions

  • CommScope Powered Fiber Cable System: Supports PoE+ (30W) devices at distances up to 2.5 km per cable output. Modular power supplies allow expansion to power multiple devices, with flexible cable gauge selection based on distance and power requirements .
  • Ubiquiti FiberPoE Gen2: Converts fiber signals to Gigabit Ethernet while injecting passive 24V or 50V PoE at the remote site. Designed for outdoor installations, it provides immunity to EMI/ESD and lightning strikes, supporting long-range deployments over kilometers .

Advantages

  • Long-distance deployment: Ideal for campuses, industrial sites, or multi-building installations.
  • Reduced cabling complexity: One hybrid cable replaces separate fiber and power runs.
  • High reliability: Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference and lightning strikes.
  • Scalable: Modular power supplies allow incremental expansion as more devices are added.

Considerations

  • Power requirements: Ensure the power supply can handle the total load of all connected devices.
  • Cable type: Indoor/outdoor rating, LSZH or riser-rated, and conductor gauge must match installation needs.
  • Installation: Unsupported aerial spans may require lashing or additional support.
  • Compatibility: Verify that the power supply voltage matches the hybrid cable and device requirements to maintain maximum distance and performance . Powered fiber PoE systems are increasingly used in smart buildings, security networks, and outdoor wireless deployments, providing a flexible and reliable solution for powering devices over long distances without the limitations of copper Ethernet.
