Purpose and Function

Heat shrink tubing, also known as fiber splice tubes or fusion protection sleeves, is used to protect the delicate splice points of multimode fiber optic cables. It safeguards the fiber from mechanical stress, bending, moisture, and temperature fluctuations, which could otherwise degrade signal transmission or damage the fiber itself . The tubing also maintains the optical transmission performance by preventing microbends or breaks at the splice joint .

Construction

A typical heat shrink sleeve consists of three main components :

  • Outer heat-shrinkable tube: Made from cross-linked polyolefin, it shrinks tightly when heated to form a rigid protective layer around the fiber.
  • Inner hot-melt adhesive tube: Provides an airtight and waterproof seal, bonding to the fiber and reinforcing the splice against environmental factors.
  • Reinforcing rod: Usually stainless steel or ceramic, this rod provides mechanical strength, preventing bending or flexing at the splice point and ensuring the fiber remains aligned during and after installation. The clear outer tube allows visual inspection of the fiber splice before shrinking, ensuring proper alignment and quality control .

Installation Process

  1. Slide the sleeve onto the fiber before performing the fusion splice.
  2. Perform the fusion splice to join the multimode fibers.
  3. Position the sleeve over the splice joint.
  4. Heat the sleeve using a fusion splicer oven or heat source. The outer tube contracts, the inner adhesive melts, and the steel rod provides rigidity, forming a durable, water-resistant seal . Proper heating is critical: insufficient heat can result in a loose fit, while excessive heat may damage the tubing or fiber .
