Handling and Safety Precautions

Before disconnecting or connecting a PAM4 AOC, always follow laser safety guidelines and use an ESD-safe environment. Place the cable on an antistatic mat, wear an ESD wrist strap, and avoid leaving transceivers uncovered except during active connection or disconnection . Never bend the cable beyond its minimum bend radius, and avoid letting loops or dangling sections stress the connectors, as this can cause permanent damage .

Cleaning Optical Interfaces

Microscopic contamination on fiber end-faces can severely degrade PAM4 signals, causing Pre-FEC BER spikes, link flapping, and TCP retransmissions . To maintain optimal performance:

  • Use engineered solvents and digital inspection scopes to clean transceiver end-faces, following IEC 61300-3-35 compliance .
  • Remove dust, oil, and residue using Clean Dry Air (CDA) or filtered compressed air, holding the can upright to avoid streaking or scratching .
  • Always handle optical modules in an ESD-safe area and avoid looking directly into active optical interfaces .
  • Replace or save rubber safety caps when transceivers are disconnected to prevent contamination .

Connection and Disconnection Procedures

When disconnecting a PAM4 AOC:

  • Pull the transceiver tab gently and slide it straight out of the port without twisting .
  • Label cables to ensure correct reconnection.
  • Wait at least 10 seconds before hot-swapping to a new cable . When connecting:
  • Align the transceiver carefully to avoid bending pins.
  • Ensure the port and transceiver are clean and free of debris.
  • Avoid bending the cable beyond its minimum bend radius .

Preventive Maintenance

Regular preventive maintenance is critical for PAM4 AOCs:

  • Inspect and clean transceiver end-faces and cable connectors periodically to prevent microscopic debris from transferring into Optical Sub-Assemblies (OSAs) .
  • Use low-ash, chemical-free wipes or CDA to remove particulates.
  • Monitor network telemetry for link flapping or BER spikes, which may indicate contamination or connector issues .
  • Replace third-party or unqualified cables with vendor-approved AOCs if persistent issues occur .
