Internal Structure Description of Optical Module

An optical module consists of transmitting and receiving optical sections, driver and control circuits, optical coupling elements, and protective mechanical housing to enable efficient electro-optical conversion.

Transmitting Section

The transmitting section, often called TOSA (Transmit Optical Sub-Assembly), converts electrical signals into optical signals. Its core components include:

  • Light Source: Typically a laser diode (LD) for high-speed, long-distance transmission or a light-emitting diode (LED) for short-distance, low-speed applications ( ). LDs offer higher output power, lower consumption, and better coupling efficiency.
  • Modulator: In high-speed modules, a modulator encodes electrical data onto the light signal.
  • Monitoring Photodiode: Monitors the output optical power to maintain stable transmission.
  • Temperature Control Elements: Thermistors or thermoelectric coolers (TEC) regulate the light source temperature to ensure consistent performance ( ).

Receiving Section

The receiving section, often called ROSA (Receive Optical Sub-Assembly), converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals:

  • Photodetector: Usually a PIN or APD photodiode that detects light and generates a corresponding electrical signal ( ).
  • Preamplifier: Amplifies the weak electrical signal from the photodetector.
  • Post-Amplifier/Equalizer: Conditions the signal for output to digital circuits, compensating for signal degradation over distance.

Circuit Section

The circuit section manages signal processing and module operation:

  • Driver Circuit: Supplies current or voltage to the light source and controls its intensity.
  • Control Circuit: Monitors temperature, voltage, and current to maintain optimal operation.
  • Temperature Control Circuit: Works with TECs to stabilize the light source temperature ( ).

Optical Section

Optical elements ensure efficient light transmission and protection:

  • Coupling Lens: Focuses light into the fiber or onto the photodetector.
  • Isolator: Prevents reflected light from damaging the laser.
  • Optical Attenuator: Adjusts signal strength to prevent receiver overload ( ).

Mechanical and Packaging Components

  • Connector: Provides a physical interface to external fibers.
  • Protective Housing: Shields internal components from dust, moisture, and mechanical stress.
  • Heatsink: Dissipates heat to maintain temperature stability ( ).

Monitoring and Interface

  • Monitoring Circuit: Tracks optical power, temperature, and current to ensure reliable operation.
  • Electrical Interface: Connects the module to the host system, often following multi-source agreements (MSA) for standardization ( ).

Summary

The internal structure of an optical module integrates optoelectronic components, driver and control circuits, optical coupling elements, and mechanical packaging to achieve reliable electro-optical conversion. Variations exist depending on data rate, transmission distance, and application, but the core components—TOSA, ROSA, driver/control circuits, and protective housing—remain consistent across most modules ( ).
