  • Longer reach: Multimode SFPs typically cover up to 500 meters using 850nm wavelength, while singlemode SFPs can reach 10 km to over 100 km using 1310nm or 1550nm wavelengths .
  • High bandwidth and low latency: Suitable for backbone, metro, and data center interconnects.
  • Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM/DOM): Provides real-time monitoring of temperature, voltage, and optical power, enhancing reliability and maintenance .

Direct Attach Copper (DAC) and Active Optical Cables (AOC)

SFP+ also supports DAC and AOC solutions, which integrate the transceiver and cable into a single assembly:

  • DAC: Passive or active copper cables for very short distances (up to 7 meters), offering low latency and low power consumption .
  • AOC: Fiber-based cables with integrated SFP+ modules, extending reach beyond DAC limits while maintaining plug-and-play simplicity.

Choosing Between Copper and Optical SFPs

When selecting SFP modules, consider:

  • Distance requirements: Copper for <100m, multimode fiber for 500m, singlemode fiber for >10 km.
  • Network speed: Ensure the module supports the desired Ethernet standard (1G, 10G, 25G).
