Connector Types

The most widely used pigtail connectors are LC and SC, which together account for over 80% of modern projects. LC connectors are small form-factor, duplex-friendly, and prevalent in data centers, while SC connectors are square, push-pull types commonly used in telecom and FTTH deployments. Other connectors include FC (screw-type, secure, often for lab/testing), ST (bayonet-style, older networks), E2000 (high-performance, premium telecom), and MT-RJ (duplex multimode, less common today) .

Fiber Types

  • Single-mode (OS2): Used for long-distance transmission, FTTH, PON, and carrier networks. Single-mode pigtails are preferred for low attenuation and high return loss .

  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8° angled polish, essential for FTTH, CATV, WDM, and 5G networks, with return loss -60 dB or better .

Special Variants

  • Armored pigtails: Encased in stainless steel or metal for protection against physical damage, ideal for industrial or outdoor environments .
  • Waterproof pigtails: Reinforced for harsh outdoor conditions, suitable for communication towers and military installations .
  • Simplex vs Duplex: Simplex pigtails have one fiber and connector; duplex pigtails have two fibers and connectors, often color-coded for polarity .
