Ribbon Fiber Cable Structure

A ribbon fiber optic cable is designed with multiple optical fibers laid side-by-side in a flat, ribbon-like formation. Each ribbon typically contains 4 to 24 fibers, with 12-fiber ribbons being the most common. Multiple ribbons can be stacked to create cables with extremely high fiber counts, sometimes exceeding 3,000 fibers in a compact design. Key components include:

  • Optical Fiber Ribbons: Bundles of fibers arranged in a flat ribbon, bonded with a matrix material for stability and durability .
  • Central Strength Member: Often a glass-reinforced plastic rod providing tensile strength and anti-buckling support .
  • Cable Core: Stacked ribbons housed within a central tube or multiple buffer tubes.
  • Water-Blocking Elements: Swellable yarns or tapes to prevent moisture ingress.
  • Outer Jacket: Protective layer made from materials like LSZH for indoor use or HDPE for outdoor applications .

Color Coding of Fibers

The TIA/EIA-598-C standard governs the color coding of fibers in both loose-tube and ribbon cables. Each fiber in a 12-fiber ribbon is assigned a specific color to facilitate identification during installation, splicing, and maintenance :

  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue) For cables with more than 12 fibers, the color sequence repeats in groups of 12. Ribbon cables may also include stripe markings or ring codes to distinguish repeated sequences or stacked ribbons, making identification easier even in low-light conditions .
