Niger has completed a 1,031 km national and cross-border fiber optic network under the Trans-Sahara Optical Fibre Backbone Project, connecting key regions and neighboring countries.

The fiber optic network covers five major routes across Niger, linking the country internally and to neighboring states:

• Diffa–N'Guigmi–Chadian border (186 km)
• Zinder–Magaria–Nigerian border (117 km)
• Niamey–Dosso–Gaya–Benin border (300 km)

Strategic Significance

As a landlocked country, Niger previously lacked direct access to submarine cables for international connectivity. This fiber optic backbone enables Niger to connect with neighbors such as Nigeria, Benin, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Algeria, which have multiple submarine cable landing points, thereby improving access to diverse and resilient international bandwidth .
