The delayed power-off mechanism in a distribution box uses a time-delay relay or control logic to postpone the disconnection of power to connected loads. When a trigger event occurs, such as a power failure or a shutdown command, the relay or controller starts an internal timer. Only after the preset delay expires does the relay open its contacts, cutting off power to the load. This prevents abrupt interruptions and allows connected systems to safely complete shutdown procedures or transition to backup power sources .

Implementation in UPS and Distribution Systems

In UPS-controlled distribution boxes, the delay is often configured in the network management card (NMC) or software like PowerChute Network Shutdown. For example, a Power Off Delay can be set for an outlet group to allow virtual machines or servers to shut down safely before the UPS de-energizes the outlets. The total delay is calculated by adding the load shutdown duration to the outlet off delay, ensuring all critical processes complete before power is removed .

Time-graded Protection in Electrical Networks

In broader distribution automation, delayed power-off is also applied for selective protection. Time-graded or inverse-time overcurrent relays are used so that the relay closest to a fault operates first, while upstream relays delay their operation. This ensures that only the affected section is disconnected, minimizing service interruption. The delay can be adjusted based on fault current magnitude, relay type, and network configuration . Safety margins are included to account for CT saturation and relay tolerances.
