Structure and Function

Multimode fibers (MMF) have a larger core diameter, typically 50 µm or 62.5 µm, compared to single-mode fibers, which have a core around 9 µm. This larger core allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously, making it easier to couple light from LEDs or lasers into the fiber. The fiber consists of three main components: the core (where light travels), the cladding (with a lower refractive index to keep light confined via total internal reflection), and a protective coating (buffer) to prevent damage and moisture ingress .

Performance Characteristics

Because multiple modes propagate, modal dispersion occurs, which limits the maximum transmission distance. Multimode fibers are typically used for short-range applications, such as within buildings, data centers, or campuses, with distances generally under 1 km . Data rates can reach up to 10 Gbps over hundreds of meters, and modern OM3–OM5 fibers can support 40–100 Gbps over short distances . MMF has higher attenuation (~10 dB/km at 850 nm) than single-mode fiber, which restricts its long-distance use .

Types of Multimode Fiber

Multimode fibers are classified as OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5, based on core size, bandwidth, and wavelength support:

  • OM1: 62.5 µm core, supports 10 Gbps up to ~33 m, typically uses LED sources.
  • OM2: 50 µm core, supports 10 Gbps up to ~82 m, also LED-based.
  • OM3: 50 µm laser-optimized, supports 10 Gbps up to 300 m, 40 Gbps up to 100 m.
  • OM4: 50 µm, higher bandwidth than OM3, 10 Gbps up to 550 m, 40 Gbps up to 150 m.
  • OM5: 50 µm, supports wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for higher data rates, up to 100 Gbps .

Applications

Multimode fibers are widely used in local area networks (LANs), data centers, and enterprise environments due to their lower-cost transceivers and easier light coupling compared to single-mode fibers. They are also used in fiber optic spectroscopy, laser welding, and short-range backbone connections within buildings .

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages:

  • Easier and cheaper to terminate and connect
  • Supports high data rates over short distances
  • Robust guidance with higher numerical aperture (0.2–0.3) Limitations:
  • Limited distance due to modal dispersion
  • Higher attenuation than single-mode fiber
