Equipment and cable tray connections

Cable trays provide a structured framework to support, organize, and connect electrical cables to equipment using standardized fittings, supports, and drop-outs.

Cable Tray System Overview

A cable tray system is a rigid assembly of sections and fittings designed to securely support insulated electrical, control, and communication cables. It allows for easy maintenance, upgrades, and safe routing of cables throughout a facility . Key components include:

  • Straight Sections: Form the main cable runs.
  • Fittings: Horizontal bends, vertical bends (risers), tees, crosses, and reducers to change direction or width.
  • Covers: Protect cables from dust, moisture, and physical interference.
  • Splice Plates: Connect straight sections securely.
  • Hold-Down Clamps: Secure covers to the tray base.
  • Drop-Outs: Allow cables to exit vertically to connect to equipment.
  • Supports: Trapeze hangers, center-span supports, and wall brackets anchor the system to the building structure .

Connection Methods Between Trays

  1. Splice Plates: Used to join two straight sections of tray. Plates are bolted to the tray side rails to ensure mechanical stability and maintain alignment .
  2. Fittings: Bends, tees, and crosses are connected using bolts or clamps to create continuous cable paths while accommodating changes in direction or elevation .
  3. Drop-Outs and Equipment Connections: Cables exit the tray through drop-outs or dedicated openings to connect to electrical devices, panels, or machinery. Proper bend radius must be maintained to prevent cable damage .
  4. Grounding Connections: Metal trays require grounding to prevent electrical hazards. Grounding lugs or bonding jumpers are used to connect tray sections and equipment to the facility's grounding system .

Supports and Mounting

Cable trays are supported using:

  • Trapeze Hangers: Suspended from ceilings to support long spans.
  • Wall Brackets: For side-mounted trays.
  • Center-Span Supports: For additional strength in long runs . Supports must be spaced according to tray type, load, and cable weight, typically every 1.5–3 meters for ladder trays and closer for solid-bottom trays .

Material Selection

Tray materials vary based on environment:

  • Steel (galvanized or stainless): High strength, corrosion-resistant.
  • Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Fiberglass (FRP): Non-conductive, highly resistant to corrosion, ideal for chemical or wet environments .

Installation Best Practices

  • Inspect trays, fittings, and accessories for damage before installation.
  • Follow approved shop drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain minimum bend radius for cables exiting trays.
  • Coordinate with other trades to avoid interference.
  • Ensure proper labeling of trays and feeders for identification .
  • Adhere to relevant standards such as IEEE, NEC, or IEC for safety and compliance . By following these methods, cable tray systems provide reliable, organized, and safe cable management while ensuring proper connection to equipment and compliance with electrical standards.
