How PoE Works with APs

Power over Ethernet (PoE) enables electrical power to be transmitted alongside data through the same Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power supplies for devices like wireless APs, IP cameras, and VoIP phones . This is particularly useful for APs installed on ceilings or outdoor locations where power outlets are not easily accessible . PoE can deliver power over distances up to 100 meters using standard Ethernet cabling.

PoE Standards

• IEEE 802.3af (Type 1): Provides up to 15.4W per port, suitable for basic APs .
• IEEE 802.3at (Type 2 / PoE+): Provides up to 30W per port, supporting higher-power APs .
• IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3 / 4PPoE / PoE++): Provides up to 60W per port, ideal for high-performance APs or devices requiring more power . Compatibility is important: an 802.3at AP may not function properly if connected to an 802.3af switch without proper negotiation, and 802.3bt APs cannot interconnect with older 802.3af switches .

PoE Switch Types

• Managed PoE Switches: Allow configuration, monitoring, and intelligent power allocation to APs. Useful in enterprise networks for load balancing and preventing overload .
• Unmanaged PoE Switches: Simple plug-and-play, suitable for small offices or home networks. They provide fixed power per port without advanced management .
• PoE Injectors: Can be used if the switch does not support PoE, providing power to a single AP via inline injection .

Deployment Considerations

1. Power Budget: Ensure the total PoE capacity of the switch exceeds the combined power requirements of all connected APs to prevent instability .
2. Cabling: Use Cat5e or higher for 1000BASE-T networks; Cat3 is only compatible with older Type 1 PoE devices .
3. Protocols: Enable LLDP or CDP on switches to allow APs to negotiate power correctly, especially for 802.3at devices .
4. Distance and Heat: Higher power APs and longer cable runs can increase heat; consider switch placement and ventilation .
