How Fiber Optic Sensors Work

Fiber optic sensors operate by sending light through an optical fiber and detecting changes in the light's intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization caused by external influences . These changes are then converted into electronic signals that can be interpreted to quantify the measured parameter. The sensors can be intrinsic, where the fiber itself is the sensing element, or extrinsic, where the fiber transmits light to a separate sensing element .

Physical Quantities Measured

Fiber optic sensors can measure a wide range of physical and environmental parameters:

  • Strain and Deformation: By embedding fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in the fiber, stretching or compressing the fiber shifts the reflected light wavelength, allowing precise strain measurement .
  • Temperature: Changes in temperature affect the fiber's refractive index or scattering properties (Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering), which can be detected optically .
  • Pressure: Pressure-induced changes in the fiber alter light intensity or phase, enabling pressure monitoring .
  • Displacement and Vibration: Variations in light intensity or interference patterns can detect small movements or vibrations .
  • Electric and Magnetic Fields: Specially doped fibers can sense voltage or magnetic fields by altering light polarization .
  • Acoustic Signals: Optical fibers can function as hydrophones or microphones, detecting sound waves in applications like seismic monitoring or MRI-compatible communication .
