Polarization-maintaining fiber and ferrule

Polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers preserve the linear polarization of light, and ferrules provide precise mechanical alignment and protection for these fibers in optical systems.

Polarization-Maintaining Fiber

PM fibers are single-mode fibers designed to maintain the linear polarization of light along a specific axis during propagation, minimizing cross-coupling between polarization modes . This is achieved by introducing stress elements in the fiber cladding, creating two perpendicular principal axes: the slow axis and the fast axis . Light coupled into one of these axes retains its polarization, with the slow axis typically preferred due to lower sensitivity to bending . PM fibers are used in applications requiring high polarization stability, such as interferometry, fiber-optic sensors, and coherent communication systems .

Ferrules for PM Fibers

A ferrule is a small cylindrical component that holds and aligns the fiber end for connection to optical devices or other fibers . In PM fiber assemblies, ferrules are critical for precise alignment of the fiber's polarization axis with the connector key, ensuring minimal polarization rotation and high extinction ratios . Ferrules can be single-fiber or multi-fiber, and the fiber end can be flat or angle-polished to reduce back reflections . The fiber is typically secured in the ferrule using adhesives or epoxy, and the ferrule may be terminated with standard connectors such as FC/PC or FC/APC .

Alignment and Assembly

Maintaining polarization requires careful alignment of the fiber's slow axis with the connector key. This is done by rotating the fiber or connector until the polarization axis matches the keyway, then fixing it with epoxy . In multi-fiber ferrules, the polarization axes of each fiber can be aligned parallel or perpendicular depending on the application . High-precision ferrules and connectors help achieve extinction ratios of 200:1 or higher, ensuring minimal polarization crosstalk .

Applications

PM fibers with ferrules are widely used in:

  • Fiber-optic interferometers and sensors
  • Laser systems requiring stable polarization
  • Optical isolators, switches, and circulators
  • Coherent communication systems The combination of PM fiber and ferrule ensures mechanical stability, precise alignment, and preservation of polarization, which is essential for high-performance optical systems .
