Easy Bridge Tray Climbing Method

The Easy Bridge Tray Climbing Method involves constructing a stable bridge-like climbing frame using spars and lashings, allowing safe climbing and training.

Overview

The method uses a bridge or climbing frame built from wooden spars (poles) and secured with lashings. This setup is commonly used in pioneering, outdoor education, or climbing training to simulate bridge traversal or elevated climbing challenges . The structure is designed to be stable enough for climbers to stand on and move across safely.

Materials Needed

  • Uprights: Two spars, approximately 3.6 meters each
  • Lower horizontal rail: One spar, 2.5 meters
  • Top horizontal spar: One spar, 1.25 meters
  • Diagonal bracing spars: Two spars, 2.5 meters each
  • Lashings: Square lashings for horizontals, diagonal lashings for bracing
  • Guy ropes: For stabilizing the frame during erection

Construction Steps

  1. Build Trestles: Lash the horizontal spars to the uprights about 1 meter from the ends using square lashings.
  2. Add Diagonal Bracing: Attach the diagonal spars to the trestles with square lashings and connect their centers with a diagonal lashing.
  3. Erect the Frame: Stand the trestles about 2 meters apart, leaning the tops toward each other so they interlock. Secure the top horizontal spars together.
  4. Strengthen the Base: Lash additional 2.5-meter spars across the lower sides to prevent the base from sliding apart.
  5. Finalize the Top Section: Use sheer or square lashings where the uprights cross to secure the top. Additional spars can be added to form a bridge tray for climbing .

Safety Considerations

  • Always assess risks before climbing, as falls from height are possible.
  • Use handrails, belays, or harnesses if necessary.
  • Ensure all lashings are tight and the frame is stable before use.
  • Consider adding extra spars for reinforcement if multiple climbers will use the frame simultaneously.

Tips for Effective Use

  • Position the frame on level ground to maximize stability.
  • Check all lashings and guy ropes regularly for wear or loosening.
  • Encourage climbers to use proper climbing techniques, such as contralateral movement and foot placement precision, to maintain balance while traversing the bridge . This method provides a practical and beginner-friendly way to create a climbing challenge that can be used for training, team-building, or outdoor activities.
