Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns fibers in a sleeve or fixture using an index-matching gel to reduce light loss. Unlike fusion splicing, it does not melt the fibers, making it faster and easier to perform:

  • Procedure: Strip and clean the fibers, cleave them, insert into a mechanical splice assembly with index-matching gel, and secure with a cover or adhesive .
  • Advantages: Quick to perform, requires less equipment, can be temporary or re-enterable, suitable for rapid repairs or short-term connections .
  • Disadvantages: Slightly higher insertion loss (around 0.3 dB), more back reflection, less durable than fusion splices .
  • Applications: Temporary connections, emergency repairs, short-haul networks, or installations with budget constraints .
