What is a dual-fiber sensor

Dual-fiber sensors are optical devices capable of simultaneously measuring two physical parameters, such as temperature and pressure or magnetic field, using specialized fiber structures and interferometric techniques.

Overview

Dual-fiber sensors leverage optical fibers to detect multiple parameters concurrently, enhancing measurement efficiency and reducing system complexity. They typically combine two sensing mechanisms within a single fiber system, allowing independent or minimally cross-sensitive detection of each parameter. Common configurations include photonic crystal fibers (PCF), dual-core fibers, and capillary fibers integrated with interferometric setups like Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZI) and Fabry–Perot interferometers (FPI) .

Working Principles

  1. Photonic Crystal Fiber-Based Sensors: In PCF dual-parameter sensors, grooves or channels in the fiber are filled with different materials, such as magnetic fluids for magnetic field detection and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing. The sensor operates on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), where changes in refractive index due to external stimuli shift the resonance wavelength. For example, magnetic field sensitivity can reach 86 pm/Gs, while temperature sensitivity can be −2.63 nm/°C .
  2. Interferometer-Based Sensors: Dual-fiber sensors can also combine MZI and FPI structures. The FPI cavity, formed by a capillary fiber between a single-mode fiber and a dual-core fiber, responds to pressure changes by altering the refractive index of air in the cavity. The MZI, often filled with a fluid like silicone oil, responds to temperature changes via the thermo-optic effect. This configuration achieves high sensitivity with minimal cross-sensitivity, enabling simultaneous measurement of pressure and temperature .

Advantages

  • High Sensitivity: Capable of detecting small variations in physical parameters.
  • Compact and Remote Sensing: Fiber-based design allows deployment in confined or hazardous environments.
  • Multiplexing Capability: Multiple sensors can be integrated along a single fiber line.
  • Low Electromagnetic Interference: Optical fibers are immune to electromagnetic noise, making them suitable for industrial and medical applications .

Applications

Dual-fiber sensors are widely used in:

  • Industrial monitoring: Pressure, temperature, and magnetic field measurements in machinery.
  • Environmental sensing: Detection of magnetic fields, temperature, or gas pressure in remote locations.
  • Medical diagnostics: Non-invasive monitoring of physiological parameters.
  • Aerospace and defense: Compact, high-precision sensors for extreme conditions .

Future Enhancements

Emerging techniques, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), can further improve detection precision and expand the applicability of dual-fiber sensors in real-world scenarios . Additionally, material innovations and advanced fiber designs continue to enhance sensitivity, stability, and long-term reliability. In summary, dual-fiber sensors integrate multiple optical sensing mechanisms within a single fiber system, enabling simultaneous, high-precision measurement of two parameters, with broad applications across industrial, environmental, and scientific fields.
