How are optical cables laid

Optical cables are laid using underground pipelines, direct burial, or overhead methods, with careful planning, protection, and routing to ensure performance and durability.

Planning and Preparation

Before laying optical cables, a site survey and planning phase is essential. Technicians evaluate the environment, existing conduits, cable trays, and potential obstacles such as walls, floors, or equipment. Environmental factors like moisture, temperature, and electromagnetic interference are considered. Planning also involves selecting cable types, connectors, and hardware locations, ensuring minimal disruption and reliable network performance .

Common Laying Methods

1. Underground Pipeline Laying

This method involves placing optical cables inside protective conduits or ducts. The cable is threaded through sub-tubes, with unused sub-tube ends sealed to prevent contamination. Traction during installation is minimized to avoid fiber damage, and personnel assist in guiding the cable from manholes. The cable is fixed on supporting plates or expansion bolts, and bends near outlet holes are avoided. Separation from power ducts is maintained to prevent interference .

2. Direct Burial

Direct burial is used when aerial installation is impractical. Cables are laid in trenches and surrounded by soft soil or sand at least 100mm thick. Protective plates, often concrete, cover the cable, and markers or stakes indicate the cable path. Depth requirements vary: at least 0.7m below ground in non-frozen areas, deeper under roads, and below the permafrost layer in frozen regions. This method ensures mechanical protection and reduces accidental damage .

3. Overhead Laying

Overhead cables are installed on utility poles, supported by steel strands. This method is cost-effective and avoids underground construction, but requires careful planning to prevent interference with existing structures. Poles and supporting hardware must be installed or relocated as needed, and emergency repairs can be more time-consuming compared to buried cables .

Installation Considerations

  • Cable Protection: Loose-tube or tight-buffer constructions protect fibers from tension, temperature changes, and water ingress. Gel-filled or dry-block designs are used depending on environmental conditions .
  • Routing: Avoid sharp bends and excessive tension to prevent fiber breakage. Conduits, trays, or raceways organize and safeguard cables .
  • Trench Preparation: Trenches should have a flat, solid base, sometimes pre-filled with sand or cement. Manual or mechanical traction is used with guidance and lubrication .
  • Indoor Installations: When passing through walls or floors, protective tubes and flame-retardant fillers are added, and cables are fixed at intervals to support vertical loads .

Testing and Maintenance

After installation, optical cables are tested for signal integrity, attenuation, and continuity. Proper labeling, documentation, and protective measures ensure long-term reliability and ease of maintenance . By following these methods and precautions, optical cables can be laid efficiently, safely, and with minimal risk of damage, ensuring high-speed, reliable communication networks.
