How to connect the FC interface

To connect an FC interface, configure the port mode, connect the cable to the target or host, and create a logical interface (LIF) if required.

Steps to Connect an FC Interface

1. Determine the Connection Type

  • Direct-Attach: Connect the host directly to the FC port on the storage system. This is supported on NetApp AFF, ASA, ASA r2, and FAS systems without requiring an FC switch .
  • Fabric Connection: Connect through an FC SAN using FC switches, which allows multiple servers and storage devices to communicate . 2. Configure the FC Port
  • Set the port mode:
    • Target mode for storage ports connecting to host initiators.
    • Initiator mode for connecting to tape drives or third-party storage (not supported for NVMe/FC), .
  • For direct-attach, take the port offline and change the topology to Direct in System Manager, then save the configuration .
  • Configure port speed to match the connected device rather than using autonegotiation to reduce reconnection delays . 3. Connect the Cable
  • Use the appropriate FC cable to connect the storage target port to the host initiator or switch port.
  • Ensure the cable is compatible with the port type and speed. 4. Create a Logical Interface (LIF)
  • On NetApp systems, create a LIF for the FC or NVMe/FC protocol:
    • Select Network > Interfaces, choose the protocol, assign a name, select a subnet if available, and assign the home port .
  • The port comes online automatically when the LIF is created. 5. Verify the Connection
  • Check that the FC port is online and the topology is correctly displayed as Direct or Fabric in System Manager .
  • On Cisco MDS switches, verify port speed, FCID, and VSAN assignment using the show interface command . 6. Additional Considerations
  • Ensure WWNs are correctly configured for fabric connections .
  • For FCoE environments, configure VLANs to carry FC traffic and disable IGMP snooping on FCoE VLANs if required .
  • Allocate sufficient buffer credits on switch ports to cover distance and frame size requirements . By following these steps, you can successfully connect an FC interface, whether using a direct-attach setup or a SAN fabric, ensuring proper communication between hosts and storage devices.
