1. Identify Input and Output: Determine the incoming power source from the main distribution board (MDB) or transformer secondary. Identify the phase (live), neutral, and earth wires. The secondary distribution box (SDB) will receive this input to supply multiple sub-circuits . 2. Install Main Protective Device: Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires to a double-pole MCB or isolator in the SDB. This acts as the main switch and provides overcurrent protection for the entire secondary board . 3. Connect to RCCB (Residual Current Device): From the output of the main MCB, connect both phase and neutral wires to the input terminals of an RCCB. The RCCB protects against earth leakage and ensures safety for all downstream circuits . 4. Distribute to Load MCBs:

  • For single-pole MCBs (SP MCBs), connect only the phase wire from the RCCB output to each MCB input. The neutral wire from the RCCB output should be connected to a neutral busbar.
  • For double-pole MCBs (DP MCBs), connect both phase and neutral from the RCCB output to the MCB input. Each DP MCB can then supply a dedicated load . 5. Connect Earth: All earth wires from the incoming supply, the SDB metallic body, and the loads should be connected to the earth busbar. This ensures proper grounding and safety . 6. Connect Loads:
  • For SP MCBs, connect the load's phase to the MCB output, and neutral and earth to the respective busbars.
  • For DP MCBs, connect both phase and neutral to the MCB output, and earth to the earth busbar . 7. Label and Inspect: Clearly mark the phase, neutral, and earth connections, and label each MCB according to the load it serves. Perform a safety inspection to check for short circuits, loose connections, or overload risks .

  • MCB and RCCB Ratings: Choose ratings based on the total load and type of connected devices. For domestic SDBs, a 63A DP MCB is commonly used as the main switch, with SP MCBs rated 10–20A for individual circuits .
  • Wiring Practices: Keep wiring neat, use plastic ties for bundling, and maintain proper spacing to avoid overheating or mechanical stress .
  • Compliance: Follow local electrical codes and standards for voltage, color coding, and protective devices . By following these steps, the secondary distribution box will be safely connected to the main power supply, providing reliable and protected power to all sub-circuits.
