Optical Module Type Standards

Optical module standards define the specifications, packaging, and performance requirements for modules that convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa, ensuring interoperability, reliability, and high-speed data transmission.

Classification by Data Rate and Application

Optical modules are categorized based on their transmission speed and network application:

  • Ethernet: 100BASE (100 Mbps), 1000BASE (1 Gbps), 10GE (10 Gbps)
  • SDH/SONET: 155M, 622M, 2.5G, 10G
  • Next-generation high-speed networks: 400G, 800G, 1.6T, and beyond

Packaging Standards

Modules are also classified by their physical packaging, which affects size, hot-pluggability, and interface type:

  • 1x9: Non-hot pluggable, typically ≤1 Gbps, SC interface
  • SFF (Small Form Factor): Non-hot pluggable, ≤1 Gbps, LC interface
