Core Structure of an SC Optical Module

The SC optical module is designed to convert electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber and vice versa. Its main structural components include:

  • Housing: Protects internal components and provides mechanical stability. SC modules typically use a 1×9 or SFP-style housing to accommodate the optical and electrical assemblies .
  • Connector and Dust Cap: The SC connector interfaces with the optical fiber, while the dust cap protects the fiber end from contamination .
  • PCB Assembly (PCBA): Contains driver circuits, limiting amplifiers, and a central controller to manage signal processing and module operation .
  • TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts electrical signals into optical signals. It includes:

    • Laser driver circuits
    • Monitoring photodiode
    • Thermistors and thermoelectric coolers for temperature control
    • Automatic power and temperature control circuits (APC/ATC)
  • ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. It typically contains:
    • Photodiode or APD (Avalanche Photodiode)
    • Pre-amplifier and limiting amplifier circuits
    • Optional booster circuits for high-sensitivity modules

Light Source Types

  • Laser Diodes (LDs): Coherent light, narrow spectral linewidth, high coupling efficiency, suitable for high-speed and long-distance transmission. Types include VCSEL, FP, and DFB lasers .
  • LEDs: Broad spectral linewidth, lower coupling efficiency, cost-effective, used for short-distance, low-speed applications .
