Protective relays receive electrical measurements from instrument transformers as inputs and issue trip signals or control commands as outputs to isolate faults and protect power system equipment.

Inputs in Relay Protection

Protective relays monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and impedance to detect abnormal conditions or faults in the power system . These measurements are typically obtained through instrument transformers:

  • Current Transformers (CTs): Reduce high primary currents to safe secondary levels for relay measurement.
  • Voltage Transformers (VTs) or Potential Transformers (PTs): Step down high voltages to levels suitable for relay inputs. The relay continuously compares these measured values against preset thresholds or logic conditions. For example, an overcurrent relay operates when the current exceeds a defined pickup value, while a differential relay compares currents entering and leaving a protected zone . Digital relays may also process phase angles and residual currents to detect earth faults or unbalanced conditions.

Outputs in Relay Protection

Once a relay detects a fault or abnormal condition, it generates an output signal to initiate protective actions :

  • Trip Signal to Circuit Breakers: The primary output is a command to open a breaker, isolating the faulted section.
  • Alarms or Indications: Relays can trigger alarms to notify operators of abnormal conditions.
  • Control Commands: Some relays can block operations, start other protection functions, or communicate with SCADA systems via digital or analog I/O interfaces . The output chain involves relay logic, trip circuits, and breaker operation, and the effectiveness of protection depends on the integrity of each link. Any failure in sensing, relay decision-making, or breaker actuation can compromise system protection .
