What is an ONU?
An ONU (Optical Network Unit) is a user-side device in Passive Optical Network (PON) systems, such as GPON or EPON, that serves as the endpoint for fiber-optic connections. It receives optical signals from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office and converts them into electrical signals for use in homes, offices, or businesses, effectively bridging the fiber network and end-user devices . ONUs are sometimes referred to as ONTs (Optical Network Terminals); the distinction is mainly terminological, with ONT being the ITU-T term and ONU the IEEE term .
How an ONU Works
- Signal Reception: The ONU receives modulated light signals from the OLT via the fiber network .
- Optical-to-Electrical Conversion: A photodiode inside the ONU converts the optical signal into electrical signals .
- Data Distribution: The electrical signals are then delivered to end-user devices through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or voice interfaces .
- Upstream Transmission: The ONU can also aggregate and optimize data from users and send it upstream to the OLT, ensuring efficient network management .
Types of ONUs
ONUs are categorized based on deployment scenarios:
- SFU/SBU (Single Family/Business Unit): Serves a single user in FTTH or FTTO networks, typically providing multiple Ethernet interfaces and 1–2 POTS ports for voice .
- HGU (Home Gateway Unit): Designed for home use, featuring Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and USB interfaces, often supporting VoIP and smart home devices .
- MDU/MTU (Multi-Dwelling/Multi-Tenant Unit): Serves multiple users in FTTB or FTTC networks, offering numerous Ethernet or DSL interfaces to connect multiple subscribers .
